Yomo Renji
Yomo is a very quiet man. Kaneki first meets him when they’re assigned by Yoshimura to pick up ‘food’ which appears to be the corpse of a suicidal man. Yomo doesn’t talk much, but he is very understanding when Kaneki cannot bring himself to contain parts of the corpse into a bag. Yomo is the only one, aside from Kaneki’s family members, who addresses him as “Ken”.
Yomo is also one of the first people who teach Kaneki how to fight. He is often seen keeping watch of Kaneki from afar. When Kaneki disarms Amon’s quinque and loses his mind due to his hunger as a ghoul, Yomo approaches him, allows himself to be attacked by Kaneki. Upon realizing that he has attacked Yomo of all people, Kaneki immediately comes back to his senses, overwhelmed by guilt.
Shortly before the Anteiku raid, Yomo is told by Yoshimura to take care of Touka. He knows that Touka will try to fight along with him. When she opens the door of her apartment ready to go, Yomo stops him. Touka breaks down in tears, saying that she doesn’t want to lose any more people in her life.
“I understand your feelings, Touka. But we can only live… while losing things.”
Unbeknownst to Touka and Ayato, Yomo Renji is actually their biological uncle from their mother’s side. Yomo hates Arata for letting his sister get killed, even though he had to run to protect the children. He bears a grudge towards Kishou Arima who killed his sister, and have attempted to kill him at least twice. Ayato and Touka have become very precious to Yomo, as they are the only remnants of his sister, he’d even sacrifice himself for them.
I can’t imagine how Yomo feels when he looks at Touka, who’s silently waiting for Kaneki’s return ever since the Anteiku raid. When Uta comes to the shop, discussing about Sasaki Haise, Touka says, I will keep on doing… what I decided to do.
(which is to wait for Kaneki). Nishiki is seen smiling upon hearing her statement. Yomo, on the other hand, stays silent. He probably pities his niece for doing so, but stands by her anyway.
Yomo is the very first person (together with Tsukiyama) whom Kaneki tells about his marriage. Despite looking indifferent at first, Yomo gets drunk during their marriage ceremony. He is probably the most excited person there, for he finally gets to see his niece taste a chance of happiness—to get together with the person she’s always loved after years of waiting.
When the oggais ambush the 24th Ward, Yomo tells Touka to run and protect the kids. He says that she has ‘other things to protect’, implying that he’s also aware of Touka’s pregnancy because Nishiki’s such a gossip.
After defeating Mutsuki and Shinsanpei, Yomo walks forward even being heavily injured, thinking of Touka and Hinami. He is stopped by Uta warning him that he’ll die if he keeps moving forward, but he tells him, I’ve been alive for that purpose.
